Facilities

Built for Women's Advancement

Achamma Bhavan was purposefully designed to do more than just house women; it was expanded to help them achieve true financial independence and self-confidence.

The Building

Our current dedicated building, completed in 1981, was built specifically to serve as a long-term centre for learning and skill development.

Vocational Focus

The facility evolved into a Hostel-cum-Polytechnic, historically linking housing directly with vocational training for school dropouts and underprivileged women.

Current Operations

Today, we provide a disciplined, supportive environment that enables our residents to focus on building their self-confidence and achieving economic independence.

History & Legacy

A History of Visionary Leadership

The creation of Achamma Bhavan required immense resilience to overcome the legal and social challenges of the 1940s.

Overcoming Barriers

Guided by the determination of Mrs. Achamma John Mathai and Mrs. Shahala Wilson, the institution successfully welcomed its first residents in 1947. In recognition of her exceptional contribution, the hostel was officially named after Mrs. Mathai in 1948.

Driving Independence

During the YWCA’s centenary year in 1975, the facility entered a new phase of transformation, evolving to actively offer vocational training and champion the holistic empowerment of women.
